In England motorists drive on the left and overtake on the right. Most Roads in England are actually of very good quality, there is an excellent motorway system and the surfaces are well maintained in most areas. British roads are actually the safest in the EU even though they can be very busy at peak times. Small country lanes are extremely narrow, with large hedgerows. Don't, however, shrink from driving such roads, as they can be avenues to beautiful scenery. When driving on these roads you must be constantly prepared to bring your vehicle to a crawl and negotiate some sort of compromise with the oncoming traffic. Generally, priority is given to vehicles on the right. Where priority is the prime control, vehicles entering priority roads are under no obligation to stop unless yielding to a vehicle on the priority road. This may be a surprise to foreign drivers at first, as vehicles seem to come flying out of side roads and partially onto the priority road with little thought of stopping; but really they do stop. Vehicles on a roundabout have priority so vehicles entering a roundabout must yield. Traffic coming from the right hand side has precedence at roundabouts.

What should I know about Parking in England?
Yellow lines indicate parking restrictions. Nearby there will be a sign which details the exact parking restrictions, but typically a double yellow line means no parking at any time, a single yellow line means no parking from 8am to 6 30pm Monday to Saturday, and a broken yellow line means that there are few restrictions. You should check the nearest sign for details of these. Red lines mean that you cannot park or stop at any time on the side of the road that they are painted on. They are usually placed on busy commuter roads in big cities. Pay-and-display machines are very common throughout Britain as well as parking meters. In pay and display machines you need to put in the money for the required amount of time, collect a small ticket and display it CLEARLY on your dashboard. If there are parking meters, just park beside the one allocated for your parking space and then put in money for the time allocation that you require. The tariff and time limit are shown on the machine. Cars illegally parked or causing obstructions can be fined or towed away. Never park on white zigzag lines, found next to school entrances and at zebra crossings.

How much does fuel cost in England?
Petrol prices in Britain are a very emotive issue at the moment because they have risen so quickly over the past number of years. Current fuel prices vary between 75 and 85p per litre (depending on the area) diesel being only a few pence cheaper.

What is the speed limit on English Roads?
Speed limit on Motorway: 112kph/70mph
Speed limit in Towns: 48kph/30mph
Speed limit on Major roads: 65kph/40mph
80kph/50mph
96kph/60mph
Speed limit in residential areas: 35kph/20mph
Round signs indicate speed limits with the limit amount circled by a red band. When the speed limit has stopped then there is a black line at an angle crossing over the speed limit indicated.

What is the conversion for kph to mph?
1 mile=1.6 km 1 U.S.
1km=0.6 miles

What is the alcohol limit in England?
Currently the blood-alcohol level is at 35mg/100ml. Recently, there have been discussions on reducing this limit so you may need to check again before you depart - just to be sure.

Are there any Toll roads in England?
Unlike most European countries there are no toll roads in Britain. All tolls in Britain are used to cross bridges such as the Humber Bridge in Hull or the Severn Bridge in Bristol. Costs on toll bridges depend on what type of vehicle that you are driving. Charges start from about £2.00 pounds to £2.50 for a car this goes up to £14.00 pounds for a truck. The prices are one-way.

What are the seat belt regulations in England?
In the UK seat belts are compulsory in the front and the rear if fitted.

What is the minimum age for driving in England?
The minimum driving age in England is 17.

Can I use my domestic licence in England?
For driving in Britain you won't need an international driving licence if your driving licence is a EU style (pink) one and/or includes a clear description in English. If your licence isn't in English, it may be useful to have a translation in the unlikely event that the police stop you. You are entitled to drive for a year in Britain without getting a British licence.

What documents may i need to carry?
You are legally required to carry your driving licence , insurance papers and registration papers (proof of ownership) with you at all times. If you have a hire car you will need to carry all the necessary documents with you also. If you fail to produce these documents the police may ask you to present them at a police station within a specified number of days.

What terms may I find useful when driving in England?
Posted: Wed Sep 01, 2010 12:20 am (GMT 0)

Turbo_10 wrote:

Pass it the First Time!
Many pepole fail their road test one, two, three, or even more times than that. I, personally, passed it on my second try by using very easy to remember tips from my Drivers Education teacher, as well as tips from other
sources and common sense as well. In here I will give you some ideas on how to pass the road test, so you can be worry free and get your license as soon as possible! These tips to pas your road tets are somewhat common sense to experienced drivers, but to newer drivers, taking their road test for the first time, this may not be common sense after all.

Practice

Practice makes perfect, right? Even in the sense of a road test this statement holds true. From what i've seen, they don't usually make you go on very busy roads for your road test, so make sure to practice on side roads which are usually less busy. This is also safer since you're less prone to an accident overall due to less influx of traffic i the same area. However, you have to be careful on side roads as well since there are more children around who may walk into the street without thinking about what might happen.

Stay Calm

One big thing that the person judging whether you should get your license is to see is if you're calm behind the wheel. Don't be a white-knuckled nervous wreck! You should be observant, but not over-observant either, that may signel nervousness behind the wheel which may make you fail your road test. Before the judge steps into the car take a deep breath and remember everything that you have learned and practiced.

Sometimes when people get nervous they also speed, this is bad, you do not want to be a road runner here. Stay at a nice, even speed throughout the entire road test session.

The Start

The prior information was stuff that happens before the actual driving. Staying calm is essential throughout the whole drive, do not forget that.

In the beginning make sure your car is off before starting. If the car is on, this may sometime make the test failed automatically, or so i've heard. When the judge says it's ok, turn the car on.

At the start you must pull away from the curb. Use your blinker when pulling away from the curb. Check your mirrors for other traffic that might be coming from your direction. If there is traffic coming, do not go and
wait for that other car to pass. Do not go over the middle lines when pulling away from the curb, this shows you are in fact in control of the vehicle in which you are operatiing.

The Middle

The actual drive is the longest part. My drive was about 5-10 minutes. Check all signs including speed limit signs, stop signs, and so on. If there's a school zone around, make sure to go at that speed, or a little bit slower. Stop fully at all stop signs to ensure that you do not get penalized. No rolling through stop signs, and stop at the stop line if applicable. When at a stop sign it is ok to "creep" up after stopping fully at the stop line to see around a corner if there's something in the way of your vision (examples: a car, a tree, a sign, ect). These are essential tips for passing your road test since they span throughout the whole road test itself.

Listening is a big part of the test as well. Listen to the judge clearly to ensure you get all instructions right. If you make a mistake, that can be bad.

Take all precautions when doing your 3-point turn and your parallel park (if applicable). Use your blinkers, check your mirrors and your blind spots.

Something major that people forget to do is look out their back mirror when they are going in reverse, This is a must, and the judge make penalize you heavily for not looking out the rear window when going in reverse since it serves as a potential threat to civilians that may walk behind your car unknowingly of the danger they are in. if you're looking back you can see a civilian easily and stop immediatley, essentially saving their life overall.

The Finish

You're almost done with the road test. You may be excited and/or nervous, but watch that speed dial! When pulling back towards the curb be careful not to hit the curb, but also don't park in the middle of the street either (me on my first road test). When you pull near the curb straighten out the car a bit if needed, and put the car in park. I suggest turning the car off as well, but I don't believe this is required.

If you pass, good job! If not, there's always next time, it's not the end of the world to not pass the first time. But these tips to help pass your road test should definitly help you with passing your road test.

What To Practice

-Acting calm.

-Beginning procedures.

-Checking your mirrors once in awhile, especially on turns.

Using your blinker for every single turn, including 3-point turns and parallel parking.

-Not getting cocky at the end, no matter how well you think you did during the rest of the road test.

Preparing for your driving test can seem especially daunting because you have to take everything you've read and actually do it! Thankfully, there are some easy ways to prepare that don't cost a lot and can really improve your chances of success. Here are some ideas for you to consider:

1. Who you will be driving with during practice? Are they someone you respect and can take advice from, or will you get flustered or anxious with them?

2. Practice in a car with an automatic transmission and power steering. Not having to worry about shifting and awkward controls will let you focus on your driving.

3. Find a quiet area without a lot of other traffic when you first start your driving practice, even if it means going a bit out of your way. Starting in a busy area with complicated traffic signals will hurt your confidence!

4. Plan your practice routes with your mentor to ensure you get to experience all of the required traffic signs, maneuvers and traffic patterns.

5. Always bring your driving manual with you on your practice drives so that you can refer to it for any technical details that you can't recall clearly.

6. Before going on a practice drive with your mentor, imagine yourself driving and visualize what you will do in different situations and what it will feel like in the car.

7. Talk to your friends about what their driving test was like, and get a sense of what the examiner was getting them to do and where they felt unprepared.

Applying these tips while you practice will reduce your stress and allow you to focus on learning the skills you need to pass your driving test the first time!
