Practice for the written test. Get familiar with the basic driving rules and regulations and learn important defensive driving techniques by reading your State Driver’s Handbook.

2
Scheduling the Driver License test appointment (Optional). In order to save time, call a Driver's License field office near you and make an appointment to take the written test.

3
Be prepared. Bring your proper identification papers, and make sure that you fit these requirements:

* Be the legal age according to the state you live in. In most states you have to be 16. The legal age ranges from 14 and 3 months in South Dakota to 17 in New Jersey and a few other states starting in 2009.
* You must have your social security card and birth certificate with you.
* For all applicants under the age of 18, the signature of the parent/legal guardian, along with the license number or social security number of the responsible person, must be listed on the application.
* Applicants must have the application signed by a parent or guardian.
* School enrollment verification is required, if the school district has implemented the No-Pass No-Drive Law. This law is extremely rare.
* Pass a vision examination.
* Pass a written examination.

4
Upon completion of the DPS test you will be issued an Instruction Permit.

* Permit holders under the age of 18 may not drive between the hours of midnight and 6:00 a.m. unless the person can demonstrate good cause for driving.
* Permit holders must be accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years of age occupying the seat beside the driver.
* Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is prohibited.

5
Take the Driving Test. To be eligible to take your driving test you must:

* Be the legal age according to your state. Ages range from 14 and 3 months in South Dakota to 17 in New Jersey and a few other states starting in 2009.
* If under 18 years of age, you must hold a Learner License for at least 6 months.
* You must bring a vehicle and be accompanied by a licensed driver. The vehicle must be in safe operating condition and have the required equipment or the road test will not be administered.
* 16 and 17 year old applicants must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
* Surrender your Learners License at the time of the road test.

6
Receive Your License. If you pass, of course. If not, it's back to the permit.

* For persons under the age of 21, a distinctive “Under 21” license will be issued. The “Under 21” operator’s license shall be valid for ninety days beyond the 21st birthday.
* All drivers are subject to (your state's) point system. A driver under the age of 18 who accumulates more than six points, or 18 and over who accumulates 12 points, may have his driving privilege suspended.
* Completion of a Driver Education Course from a high school or a four-hour Graduated Licensing Education course must be completed within one year AFTER obtaining the license, for drivers 16 and 17 years of age. All drivers under the age of 21 are subject to “Zero Alcohol Tolerance” (defined as .02 BAC).
